Philip Vivian is a member of the Architects Male Champions of Change group.
Philip is a Director of Bates Smart. He holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University in New York and has over 25 years of professional experience.
Philip’s design leadership has ensured numerous design competition wins and design awards, underpinning the successful growth of the Bates Smart Sydney studio over the past 15 years. He has led successful bids for the NSW Police Headquarters and the Parramatta Justice Precinct. His projects have received 13 AIA design awards for Commercial Architecture, Residential Architecture, Interior Architecture, Urban Design, ESD and Heritage; and have been published throughout Australia and internationally.
Philip is highly regarded by his clients for his rational problem solving, his commercial understanding and his collaborative approach. He is also highly respected in the architecture and design professions, and has lectured extensively with a particular focus on the new workplace and sustainability in commercial buildings. He is regularly invited to sit on design review panels and competition juries. In the 2012 AIA (NSW) Architecture Awards Philip was Chair of the Public and Urban Design Jury, as well as Chair of the Jury Chairs.
Philip is an Associate of the AIA and sits on the institute’s Large Practice Forum. He has lectured and taught architecture and urban design at a range of Australian universities including the UNSW, UTS, The University of Sydney, The University of Melbourne and UWA. He is regularly sought to contribute to Architecture Australia, AR and The Bulletin.
